Inman, SC. - Alice Catherine Gaines Sloan, age 97, of 200 Fortress Drive, died Thursday, December 9, 2010.
She was a native of Greenwood and a long-time resident of Clinton S.C. and a daughter of the late Robert Edwin and Winifred Fitts Gaines of Greenwood.
Mrs. Sloan was a member of Providence A.R.P. Church of Clinton. She was a graduate of Winthrop College and Duke University and was a retired English teacher, having taught at Clinton High School for 29 years. She was also organist at Providence Church for a number of years and the editor of the textile publication, The Joanna Way, for eleven years.
She was the widow of James Park Sloan II and is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Edwin and Sheri Sloan of Inman, and Jim and Athena Sloan of River Forest, Illinois, one sister and brother-in-law, Winifred and Richard Gray of Greenwood, eight grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be conducted Saturday at 4:30 at the Ora A.R.P. Church Cemetery in Ora, S.C. conducted by Rev. Dr. Tom Sherer. The family will receive friends Saturday from 3:00 to 4:00 P.M. at the Gray Funeral Home in Clinton.
