Allene Martin Hawthorne Aughtry
Allene Martin Hawthorne Aughtry, age 90, of 125 Morse Street passed away on December 27, 2012 at her home. She was predeceased by her husband of 53 years, Zack Eugene Aughtry.
She was born in Abbeville County and was raised in Due West, SC, she was a daughter of the late Andrew Cowan and Ora Belle Martin Hawthorne.
Mrs. Aughtry is survived by two daughters, Eugenia Aughtry Best of the home and son-in-law James M. Best, and Ida Aughtry Hickson and son-in-law Clifford A. Hickson of Whitmire, and a grandson, Christopher Robert Stapleton of Little Mountain.
After graduating Erskine College, Mrs. Aughtry began her teaching career of thirty eight years in Whitmire. She served her students not only as a high school math teacher, but in many other capacities as well, including Senior Sponsor and sponsor of the Future Teachers Club of America. She was honored as Teacher of the Year at Whitmire High School on several occasions. Mrs. Aughtry was a dedicated teacher who encouraged and truly loved all of her students.
Mrs. Aughtry was an active member of the Whitmire Presbyterian Church where she has served on the Board of Elders and as church treasurer. She was a member and Sunday school teacher of the Wilma Miller Bible Class, a member of the Fanny Simpson Circle, and was honored as an Elder Emeritus.
She was predeceased by three sisters, Sarah Jean H. Hardin, Mary H. Cribbs, and Martha M. Hawthorne; two brothers Andrew C. Hawthorne Jr. and Robert Franklin Hawthorne.
Visitation will be Saturday, December 29th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire. Funeral Services will be held on Sunday, December 30th at 3:00 p.m. at Whitmire Presbyterian Church followed by burial in the Whitmire Cemetery.
