Annelle Stover White, age 91 and long-time resident of Cheraw, S.C., died August 9, 2009 in her sleep at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton, S.C.
A 50 year resident of Cheraw, Mrs. White was born in Lancaster County on April 15, 1918 on a farm that had been in her family since before the American Revolution. She was an accomplished raconteur and amateur writer who told vividly entertaining stories of her own childhood and other stories passed down by her family. These stories included their early interactions with the Catawba tribe.
As a young woman, she met her future husband, Hiram H. White, Jr. of Rock Hill while learning to fly after winning a Civil Air Patrol scholarship. The couple married in Tucson, AZ on September 18, 1943 where Captain White was training pilots for the Army Air Corps.
Mrs. White pursued many career interests at a time when opportunities for women were limited. She hosted a children’s program at a Rock Hill radio station in the early 1950’s. She ran an art gallery in Charlotte in the late 1960’s and was a financial planner with Waddell & Reed in the 1980’s. She also worked with her husband in his accounting practice in Cheraw, where both were active members of the First Presbyterian Church. They moved to the Presbyterian Home in Clinton in 2001.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Catherine White Ingold and Thomas Ingold of Arlington, Virginia; a grandson and his wife, Thomas and Alisha Ingold of Tampa, Florida; two great-grandchildren, Veronica and Nicholas; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Hiram Hutchison White, Jr.
