Arthur Gaines Smith, age 88 of Alexandria, Virginia, died Sunday, May 30, 2010. He formally lived in Chester and Clinton, South Carolina. He was born in Spartanburg, SC, December 6, 1921 to James and Edna Coggins Smith.
Art served in the US Navy’s submarine service during World War II, deploying on six war patrols on the Skate (SS-305). While aboard the Skate, he was awarded the Silver Star for gallantry under enemy fire while saving two downed pilots.
After the war, Art was employed as a brick mason, moving his family to northern Virginia in 1963 where he remained until his death.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Lucille Smith and his brother, J. W. Smith.
Survivors include two sons, Terry Smith and his wife Connie, and Tony Smith and his wife, Carol; one brother, Henry Smith of Greenville and his children, Rick and Saundra; one grandchild, Joel Smith and two step-grandchildren, Derek Bauckman and his wife, Amber and daughter Delia, and Jacob Bauckman and his wife Becky and son Charlie, all from Virginia.
A memorial service will be held at Rosemont Cemetery, Clinton, SC on Friday, June 4, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. The family will receive friends, Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
