Barbara Sauthoff Hollis

Mrs. Barbara Sauthoff Hollis, 89, widow of Col. Joel M. Hollis (USA Ret.) of Clinton, SC died on June 13, 2009 at Laurens County Hospital. She was a resident of Presbyterian Home and had lived in Merrie Oaks for 25 years.
Barbara was born in Madison, WI on Feb. 25, 1920 to George and Barbara Sauthoff.
She graduated from Madison Eastside High School in 1937. She graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing and proudly served her country as a 1st. Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps as a RN from 1943 through 1945. During WWII she was stationed for one and a half years in England where she met her future husband. She married Joel M. Hollis on July 3, 1946.
After moving to Clinton in 1970, she was a private duty nurse at Bailey Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton, and a founding member of the “Sew and Sews”, active in both until the time of her death.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her sister Eleanor Lacey Nicholas.
She is survived by her children, Barbara Ann Hollis of Inman, SC, Joel Hollis, Jr. and Bill Hollis of Broomfield, CO, and Fran Hollis of Walnut Cove, NC, seven grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, one great godson and a large extended family.
There will be a memorial service on Wednesday, June 17th at 4pm at the Presbyterian Home Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations in Barbara’s memory are requested to be made to the Presbyterian Home of Clinton or Hospice of Laurens County in Clinton.
