Obituary for Caroline White Donnan

Caroline White Donnan, 99, of Wesley Commons, Greenwood, SC, formerly of Whitmire, SC, and Greenville, SC, was born on August 27, 1917, and died January 6, 2017. For two years, she attended Greenville Women’s College (later Furman University) and received her BS degree from Winthrop College in 1939. One month later she married George Stewart Donnan of Whitmire, and they celebrated 54 years together before he died in 1993. They were the parents of four children: an infant who died at birth and a son George Stewart Donnan, Jr., who was killed in an automobile accident in 1968 at the age of 24. Surviving are their daughters Carol Curry and husband Gene of Laurens, SC, and Mary Ann Gilbert and husband Carl of Alpharetta, GA; grandchildren Caroline Curry Mills and husband Paul, Lowry Curry and wife Lauren, Stewart Curry and wife Nathalie, Greg Gilbert and wife Linda, and Brady Gilbert and wife Jennifer; and eight great grandchildren: Elizabeth, Emily, Wesley, and Caroline Curry; and Noah, Samantha, Sophie, and Ashley Gilbert. She was predeceased by her parents Walter and Mabel White and siblings Bobbie Houser, Mary West, and Bill and Dick White. Caroline was the consummate homemaker and was active in her community and the Methodist church. She was also an avid golfer and swimmer.

Her service will be at Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire on Thursday, January 12, at 11 a.m. The family will receive friends at 10 a.m. and burial will be in the Whitmire Cemetery immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorials for Wesley Commons, 1110 Marshal Road, Greenwood, SC 29646; for Tranquil UMC, 1702 McCormick Hwy, Greenwood, SC 29646; or for Whitmire UMC, PO Box 306, Whitmire, SC 29178.
