Dateline – Waterloo, SC
Charles William “Pete” Wilkie, of Waterloo, South Carolina, departed this physical world on October 14, 2014, at the age of 66 at Hospice of Laurens County.
He was the son of the late Clyde and Lucille Cole Wilkie.
Mr. Wilkie retired from Milliken Trucking and was a member of First Baptist Church of Clinton.
While we no longer can gaze into his beautiful light blue eyes, see his ever-present smile, and experience his lively spirit to keep us company, our memories will never fade.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, singing and shagging; but most of all he loved to build high-powered motors and race drag boats and was known as Pete “Flatbottom” Wilkie. “Can’t be done” was not in his vocabulary. The same spirit of loving life was instilled in his children, creating tense moments for mothers. He pioneered parasailing on Lake Greenwood. There was a never-ending supply of power toys for big kids and small kids. Pete’s shop was never lacking friends sharing unforgettable experiences. Who would have thought this self-taught mechanic who started as a teenager in an old barn with “Wilkie’s Speed Shop” hand painted on the door, would become an accomplished racer and a legend. He was a friend we all came to respect, admire and love.
He is survived by Nanette Young Wilkie, his wife of 38 years, and three children, Jill Wilkie (Daniel Hedou), Caroline Wilkie Whiteford (Stephen), and Charley Wilkie (Regan); four grandchildren, Paige Osborne, Railey Wilkie, Jenna Whiteford, and Linley Wilkie. He is also survived by nine siblings, Margaret Lewis, Doris Weisner, Patsy Copeland, Marshall “Chuck” Wilkie, Mary Hanks, Frances Trammell, and Cynthia Stone. He was predeceased by two brothers, John Calvin Wilkie and Ralph Wilkie.
Memorials may be made to Hospice of Laurens County, PO Box 178, Clinton, SC 29325.
