Charles L. Cummins, Jr.

Dr. Charles L. Cummins, Jr. age 85 of Presbyterian Home, widower of Carolyn P. Cummins, died Tuesday, April 19, 2011in the Laurens County Hospital.
He was born in Portland, Tennessee, was the son of the late Charles L. Cummins, Sr. and Virginia Moncrief Cummins.
He was educated in public schools in middle Tennessee and received his undergraduate degree from The University of Tennessee. He also received graduate degrees from George Peabody College, the Ohio State University and The University of Tennessee. He spent twenty-two months in the U. S. Navy during World War II, serving in the Pacific Theater as a motor machinist aboard USS LSM 467. He spent forty-three years in various capacities as an educator serving as a teacher, coach, athletic director, counselor, director of guidance, associate director of a laboratory school, associate director of a large federal program, assistant superintendent and superintendent. He retired in June, 1995 after serving twenty-four years as superintendent for Laurens County School District No. 56. During his service, he received more than twenty-five recognitions for service in education and his community. Among those was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. He was an ordained Deacon and Elder in the Presbyterian Church USA and a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton.
Surviving are a daughter and her husband, Rebecca C. May and Allen of Appling, GA and a son, Charles L. Cummins, III, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Private graveside services will be held in the First Presbyterian Church Cemetery followed by a Memorial service Friday, April 22, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in First Presbyterian Church of Clinton.
The family will receive friends immediately after the service in the Fellowship Hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church , Clinton, SC 29325, The Presbyterian Home of SC, or Hospice of Laurens County or a charity of one’s choice.
