Clara Evelyn Woody Serna, age 88, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, teacher, and friend, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2019, surrounded by love. Born on May 6, 1931, Evelyn lived a full life as a talented teacher and musician, dedicated nurse, loving wife, and adoring mother to two daughters, Mary and Karen.
Evelyn was one of the first women to attend Presbyterian College. She received her Diploma in Piano and her Affiliated Teaching certificate from the Sherwood School of Music in Chicago, Illinois. She went on to teach piano lessons in the community for many years. She was also a member of the Laurens County Chorale for several seasons. As she found great joy in sharing her love for music with others, Evelyn played piano and sang for various events throughout the community.
Evelyn received her Licensed Practical Nurse degree from Piedmont Technical College. Evelyn helped to open Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, and she worked there until her retirement. In a testament to her servant’s heart, she then went on to serve the children of the community as a substitute nurse in Laurens County School District 56.
Evelyn was a past President of the Clinton chapter of the American Legion Auxiliary and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.
Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, William, her brother, William Woody, and her nephew, Robert Woody. She is survived by her daughters Mary Leitner (Jim) and Karen Schoppe (Paul), her grandchildren Meredith Serna, Katie Lane (Alex), Jacob Leitner, Bailey Gibson, her sister, Kate Franklin, her brother, James Woody, her sister-in-law, Wanda Woody Workman, and many nieces and nephews.
