Daphne Leona Nance Huff died at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Summerville, South Carolina on April 2, 2008 after a period of declining health. At the time of her death, she was 94 years of age. She lived most of her life in Whitmire, South Carolina, where she was born. She was the daughter of Eugene Sims Nance and Lula Mae Cobb Nance and the widow of Atticus Glenn Huff, Jr. She was a descendant of the Lyles and the Nance families, two of the oldest families in Newberry County. She was a 1931 honor graduate of Whitmire High School, as well as a 1936 honor graduate of Newberry College. She taught in the public schools in Simpsonville, South Carolina, for two years before she married and later in Whitmire for twenty-two years.
Surviving are her two children, Mary Nance Huff of Charleston, South Carolina and Glenn Huff of North Richland Hills, Texas; two granddaughters, Rebecca Leigh Huff Shultz of Maplewood, New Jersey, and Mary Elizabeth Huff of Fuquay Varina, North Carolina; and two great-grandsons, Jonathan Luke Shultz and William Reid Shultz, also of Maplewood, NJ.
Her funeral service will be held at the graveside in the Whitmire Cemetery on Sunday, April 20 at 2:00 PM. Former students as well as other friends and family are invited to attend. Her family will receive visitors at Gray Funeral Home, Church Street, Whitmire, South Carolina from 4:00 PM until 6:00 PM on Saturday, April 19.
