David B. Ayres, Jr., died Thursday, October 12, 2006, at Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, Laurens, S.C., after a long illness. He passed away in his sleep surrounded by his family.
A service of remembrance will be held Sunday, October 15, 2006, at 3:00 p.m. at Martha Franks Retirement Center, Razor Chapel, 1 Martha Franks Drive, Laurens, SC. A reception will follow the service in the Cooper Dining Room.
David was born June 17, 1921, in Penn Yan, New York, to David B. Ayres, Sr. and Esther G. Ayres. His many accomplishments included his Eagle Scott award and his involvement in his church and communities. He graduated from Stanton Military Academy and enrolled at Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, where he met and married Margaret Marie Crozier of Honolulu, Hawaii, in November 1943. David enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 34th Division, U.S. Army as a 1st Lieutenant, during which he was awarded the Bronze Star and the Silver Star. Having earned his Bachelor of Science, David and Margie moved to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1947 where he began his practice as a certified public accountant. David’s long career took him to Chicago, Illinois and Roanoke, Virginia as a partner in the firm of Alexander Grant. He served as Comptroller of the State of Virginia under Linwood Holton’s administration and later as Auditor General of the 5th District of the Federal Reserve System, retiring in 1989. After retiring in 1989 David and Margie moved to South Carolina to be closer to their family.
David was preceded in death by his parents, daughter-in-law Carol Jenkins Ayres and his grandson Victor Scott Hannon.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Margaret C. Ayres; a brother Charles Fenton Ayres of Laurens, SC; his children, Barbra Jones of Winston-Salem, NC; Jane Hannon (Vic) of Camden, SC; David B. Ayres, III of Advance, NC and Cece Boyne (Bud) of Beaufort, SC; six grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
