Dexter Winfield Hess

August 1, 1927 — March 16, 2018

Dr. Dexter Winfield Hess, age 90, widower of Violet Fern Hess, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018 at the National Health Care of Clinton.
He was born in Rome, GA and was a son of the late Benjamin and Dexter Mae Quinton Hess.
Dr. Hess received his early schooling in Rome, GA, and was a veteran of the US Army who served in WWII, he later attended Duke University where he received both his Bachelors and Masters degrees. Dr. Hess completed his studies by receiving his PhD from the University of Colorado, he then taught botany, nutrition, and other science related courses at Otero Junior College for the next 25 years, where he would also serve as Dean of Faculty for seven years. Upon leaving the educational field, Dr. Hess worked for Western Foods Company where he was a Quality Control Manager for four years. Upon his retirement, he continued to be active as a science consultant and researcher, and completed various studies on the historical changes of the vegetation at Bent’s Old Fort, Boggsville, and various other sites in the lower Arkansas Valley. Over the years he was active in many community activities including, scouting, science fairs, Hospice Volunteer, and Blood Donor.
Dr. Hess is survived by his stepson, Monty Folsom (Ann) of Truckee, CA; his stepdaughters, Cheryl Ann Martin (Don) of Gray Court, SC and Elsa Lee Barela (Dan) of Arvada, CO; his five brothers, Ronald Hess (Yvonne) of Kingston, GA, Arlen Hess (Mary Ann) of Atlanta, GA, Lyle Hess of Coosa, GA, Glenn Hess of Cutter, OH, and Nolan Hess (Johnnye) of Pineville, LA; his sister, Helene Coleman (Leslie) of Rome, GA; his four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is predeceased by an infant daughter, Paula Hess.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 9, 2018 at 11 AM at the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Clinton.
