Libby was born in Bland, VA, on April 15, 1927, to Martin Luther and Mary Newberry Greever. She graduated from Bland High School in 1943. She attended Marion College and then Lenoir Rhyne College, where she received a BA in English with a minor in French in 1947. She taught at Jonesville High School in Jonesville, NC, and during that time, met her future husband, Bennie Lee Shumate, at the bowling alley in the nearby town of Elkin, NC, where he lived. They were married in 1950. After residing in New York and Charlotte, NC, they moved to Fayetteville, NC, where she lived until 2013. During her 56 years in Fayetteville, Libby was primarily a stay-at-home mom, but she also taught at Massey Hill High School and Highland Presbyterian Church Kindergarten and served as bookkeeper for her husband’s business, Shumate Sales.
Libby was a longtime member of Highland Presbyterian Church, where she was a member of the Emma Lee Howie Sunday School Class. She also enjoyed the friendships she and Bennie made through Social 25 in Fayetteville. An active member of the Ladies Golf Association at Green Valley Country Club and later at Highland Country Club, she loved the game of golf and was very proud of her three holes-in-one! Libby was an avid fan of the Carolina Tar Heels as well, despite being a native of Virginia. She loved to travel for vacations and family visits and had been to all 48 of the contiguous United States, as well as Mexico, Panama, and Germany.
Libby was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie; her parents; her sisters, Louise Greever Elliott and Mary Newberry Greever; and a nephew, John Martin Elliott.
