Elizabeth Toccoa "Cozy" Todd

Elizabeth Toccoa “Cozy” Todd passed away peacefully on Monday, September 2, 2024

She was born on April 22, 1930, and was the sixth and youngest child of Walter Hoag and Toccoa Caine Powell of Whiteville, North Carolina.

Her early education was in the Whiteville City Schools. She graduated in 1948 from Whiteville High School. She was the valedictorian of her class and was named “All Columbus County” basketball player for Whiteville High School and a cheerleader during high school.

After graduating from high school, Cozy attended Mary Baldwin for two years in Staunton, VA before transferring to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she obtained a degree in Elementary Education and was a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.

As a graduation gift from her parents, she traveled through Europe for three months with her fellow graduates and two UNC professors as guides. The highlight of her trip was attending the Summer Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.

After she returned home, she began planning her wedding with her fiance and the love of her life, Thomas Darlington Todd.

Tommy and Cozy were married on November 8, 1952, at Westminister Presbyterian Church in Whiteville, NC.

After honeymooning in Sea Island, GA, they returned to Laurens, SC to reside and raise their three sons, Thomas “TD” Darlington Todd, Jr., Monteith “Monty” Todd, and Walter Conway Todd.

Although Cozy was a “stay at home” mother, she taught Sunday school, led the Sr High Youth Group at First Presbyterian Church, was a cub scout leader, and attended every sporting event (football, baseball, and basketball) that her sons participated in, and was an avid reader and brilliant bridge player.

In addition to her sons, she is survived by three daughters-in-law that she has always referred to as her very own daughters, Bowdre Budd Todd (TD), Patricia “Sissy” Todd (Monty), and Lynne Neal Todd (Walter).

She is the proud grandmother of Thomas Darlington Todd, III (Sarah), Tolly Todd Garrison(Ryan), Liza Todd Dick (David), Monty Powell Todd, Jr. (fiance, Maggie), Walter Conway Todd, Jr., and William Neal Todd (Hayden). Step grandchildren are Amanda Schneider (Phil) and Taylor Golmont (Bailey)

In addition to her grandchildren, she is survived by nine great-grandchildren. Eliza Garrison, Toccoa Garrison, Charlotte Garrison, David Dick, Jr., Ruthie Dick, George Dick, Thomas Darlington Todd IV, Wells Todd, and Winn Todd. Her step-great-grandchildren are Nell Golmont and Coleman Schneider.

Cozy is predeceased by her siblings, Walter “Buck” Powell, Frank Powell, Monteith Powell, Rosa Caine Powell Bacon, and Mariegene “Map” Powell Litton.

The funeral service will be at First Presbyterian Church of Laurens at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, September 4, 2024. There will be a visitation at the home of Cozy Todd on Tuesday from 5:00 - 7:00 PM, and the family will also receive friends in the church sanctuary following the funeral service.
