Elizabeth Foster Robinson
Elizabeth Foster Robinson (Bets), age 90, entered the Church Triumphant on December 5, 2009. Bets was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, and grandmother. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Charles Neely Robinson of Lancaster, SC.
Bets was born in Ohio, where she grew up, the daughter of Grace Hartman Foster and Robert Burch Foster. She graduated from Ohio Wesleyan University where she earned a B.A. and Northwestern University where she earned an M.B.A. Intelligent, hardworking, and tenacious, Bets began her career as the Assistant Employment Manager for The Fair Store, a large department store in Chicago. She went on to teach Economics and Business Administration at Winthrop College in Rock Hill, SC and Catawba College in Salisbury, NC.
Bets was a member of Lancaster ARP Church for over 50 years where she taught Sunday School. An avid volunteer and natural leader, she was involved in many church and civic organizations, serving in such capacities as: President of Women of the Church, Strengthening Church Committee member, Lancaster County Recreation Commission, Lancaster County United Fund, Hope of Lancaster County Organization Committee, Chairman of Volunteers for the Opened Door, and Hospital Red Cross Nurse’s Aid. Bets was honored by the Lancaster Jaycees as Woman of the Year in 1967. Girl Scouting was an important part of Bets’ life. She served as a troop leader, Town of Lancaster Neighborhood Chairman, Congaree Area Council Vice President and President, as well as a National Council Delegate and Council Board Member. She was honored by the Girl Scouts with the Thanks Badge and was named a Life Member in 1986. Well respected and loved by her family and friends, Bets will be sorely missed.
Bets is survived by her daughter Nan Robinson of Charlotte, NC, her daughter and son-in-law Peggy and Skip Stansell of Clinton, SC, her granddaughter, Neely Stansell-Simpson and her husband David Simpson of Columbia, SC, her great-granddaughter Sophia Neely Simpson, her nieces and their husbands Suzanne and Buddy Lever, Corinne and Frank Brackett, Elizabeth and Joe Simpson of Lancaster, SC, Cathy and Boyce Wilson of Rock Hill, SC and her nephews and their wives Craig and Lisa Savant of Parkland, FL and David and Gigi Savant of Winter Haven, FL as well as her brother-in-law Warren Savant of Winter Haven, FL.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Thornwell Home for Children, P.O. Box 60, Clinton, SC 29325. A private family graveside service is scheduled in Lancaster early next week and a memorial service will be held later in the month.
