Ethel Copeland Cornwall, age 98, of 500 East Carolina Avenue, Clinton, and The South Carolina Presbyterian Home in Clinton passed away Thursday, May 4th. She was born November 17, 1907, the daughter of the late Lou Jones Copeland and George A. Copeland of Clinton. She graduated from Clinton Schools and also attended Chicora College in Columbia, South Carolina which later became Queens College of Charlotte, North Carolina.
She was predeceased by a brother and three sisters, Mr. George Pringle Copeland, her twin sister, Mrs. Brooks (Ellen) Owens, Mrs. Horace (B.) Payne, and Mrs. Ferdinand (Ame) Jacobs.
She is the widow of James Jeter “Peck” Cornwall. Surviving are children, Lou Jones Cornwall Giles and husband Joe, of Clinton, Mary Ellen Cornwall Stokes and husband Tommy, of Spartanburg, and a special nephew, William B. Owens and wife Mary Ann and family of Hendersonville, North Carolina.
She is also survived by grandchildren, Mr. Mason Stokes and wife Catherine of Spartanburg, Mr. Yancey Cornwall Stokes, also of Spartanburg, Mrs. Martha H. Osborn and husband Rock of Anderson, and Mr. Jim Horton and wife Rhonda of Pawley’s Island, South Carolina.
There are 3 great-grandchildren, Ashley Cornwall Watts of Anderson, and Jake Horton and Chandler Horton of Pawley’s Island.
She is also survived by 5 nieces and nephews and numerous great nieces and great nephews.
She was a life-long resident of Clinton and member of the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton.
At the Church, she has been president of the Chapel Bible Class and brought flowers from her yard to the class every Sunday. She was presented an Honorary Life Membership from the Presbyterian Women of the Church.
She shared her love of gardening with many friends by her gifts of vegetables and flowers that she had grown.
For many years, she was also a member of several garden clubs and book clubs.
Services will be conducted 3:00p.m. Saturday, May 6th at the First Presbyterian Church, Clinton with burial at the First Presbyterian Church cemetery.
Visitation will be at the home at 500 East Carolina Avenue.
