Francis Vinton (Vinnie) Smith, Jr. PhD, age 70, of 107 S. Adair St. died Saturday, April 17, 2010.
He was born in New Brunswick, NJ and was the son of the late Lt. Col. Francis Vinton Smith, Sr. and Louise T. Smith.
Dr. Smith received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University, his Masters degree from Appalachian State University and his PhD degree from Georgia State University.
He retired from Whitten Center after 30 years of service holding such positions as Director of Educational Programs and Regional Director of Community Services.
Vinnie was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, sang in the choir and was a youth group leader. He was a member of the Clinton Kiwanis Club, SASS and was a Guardian Ad Lethem. He volunteered at elementary schools as a tutor, was a CARF surveyor and was an Eagle Scout.
Throughout Dr. Smith’s life he touched many people, from the special needs clients he advocated for to the students he taught and the youth he mentored.
He is survived by his wife, Jane Pitts Cobb Smith of the home; three daughters, Jan Smith Clifford and husband, Patrick of Charlotte, NC, Debbie Smith Whiteman and husband, Edmund of Greenville and Cindy Smith Geiger and husband, Bill of Columbia; two step children, George Cobb and wife, Penney Patton of Lubbock, TX and Catherine Cobb Smith and husband, Gary of Clinton; grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel and James Whiteman, Emily Geiger and Ben and James Cobb; a brother, Taylor H. Smith of Waldorf, MD and a niece, Serena Smith of Waldorf, MD.
A memorial service will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. in the Pinelawn Memory Gardens Mausoleum.
