George Preston Layne, age 87, husband of Nancy Gatch Layne, passed away Tuesday, May 31, 2022, at Prisma Health-Laurens County Hospital.
He was born September 11, 1934 in Pikeville, KY, and was a son of the late Denver E. Layne and Dura Hamlin Layne.
George was a graduate of Williamson High School and attended Pikeville Jr. College in Pikeville, KY. He retired as Partner and Service Manager from Lynn Cooper Inc. in 1999 after 28 years of service. He was the past president of the Chevrolet “Only the Best Club” for both North and South Carolina.
George was a proud Veteran of the USMC, having served from 1953-1956.
Mr. Layne was a faithful and longtime member of Cornerstone Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and on various committees. One of his greatest passions was attending Mission trips with Cornerstone.
George was a man of purpose, always looking ahead and planning for the welfare of others. His desire to be of service always amazed me. Even on mission trips when he was not physically able to help, he found joy being alongside the men giving his opinions, wisdom, and encouragement. As his wife, mom felt very blessed to have shared so many wonderful years with such a loving, selfless, and dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, who loved his Lord and Savior.
Dad enjoyed playing the piano and accordion, and “fixing things” (a handyman indeed)! He loved hunting at Kaye’s Lodge with all the special men and boys in his life.
Dad exhibited strength and courage his entire life, even until the moment he met his Heavenly Father.
In addition to his wife of the home, Mr. Layne is survived by his brother, Fred Layne (Geri); his children, Kathy Lawson (Russell), Denny Layne (Christy), Vera Kinsey (Johnny); his grandchildren, Morgan Greb (Nick), Anna-Layne Schneider (Brandon), Calli Santifort (Taylor), Bristow Kinsey (Jess), Elliott Layne (Sophie), Mallori Farkas (Jake), Molly Maxwell (Evan); his great-grandchildren, Cooper and Coy Greb, Watson, Emerson, Margaret, and Oliver Schneider, Nesta and Hawkins Maxwell, and Jack Santifort; his sister-in-law, Sara Ruff; and his brother-in-law, Buddy Gatch (Kaye).
Funeral Services will be conducted at 3:00 PM on Saturday, June 4, 2022 at Cornerstone Baptist Church, Clinton, SC, with Rev. Bill Moore officiating. Burial will follow at Pinelawn Memory Gardens, Clinton, SC.
