George Nichols, age 89 of Greenwood, SC, went to be with the Lord on the morning of August 28, 2019.
George was born on June 3, 1930 in Sumter, South Carolina. A Citadel graduate in 1953, George entered the United States Army as a second lieutenant and served during the time of the Korean War in the 78th AAA (Antiaircraft) Gun Battalion.
A destined bachelor who was content to spend his weekends fishing and enjoying the outdoors, until he met the woman of his dreams and married Mary Anne Nichols in 1959, with whom he had three children, two grandchildren, a step great grandson and a great granddaughter.
George was a devout Christian and served the Lord through service at the church as Accountant, Chairman of the Deacons, Greeter, Choir Member, Landscaper, as well as being devoted to the "Great Commission" and telling others the Good News of Jesus Christ. George selflessly served his family, community and friends through acts of kindness as well as being a devoted husband, father, and man of faith.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Anne Nichols (Thornburg), his sister Gloria Kerr, his children George Kelly Nichols (Glenda), Susan Simpson (Daryl), Mark Nichols (Ruby Whidby); his grandchildren Christopher Nichols (Stephanie) and Elizabeth Wilson (William); and his step-great grandson Finlay Helms and his great granddaughter Lula Mae Nichols. He is preceded in death by his parents James L. and Slava (Kvaternic) Nichols as well as his 6 siblings.
The family will hold a private ceremony and ask that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
