George A. (Al) Reid Jr.

February 25, 1945 — October 8, 2017

George A. (Al) Reid, Jr. was born on February 25, 1945 in Oakland, CA and passed away October 8, 2017 at the Hospice House of Laurens County surrounded by family and friends.
Big Al or Mean Old Al as he was begrudgingly referred to by his children’s friends lived a big life. On weekends when he wasn’t operating a crane for his construction business, George A. Reid, Inc, he loved weekend rides with his BMW motorcycle group “The Old Farts” formerly known as FOG, Fast Old Guys. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. Those skills came in handy when trying to find his drone after crash landing in remote areas. Big Al was handy. He built custom dune buggies, a cedar strip kayak and handmade cutting boards. He could also fix just about anything and was always available to help out friends with broken things. Probably his best known trait was that he was an excellent “Pot Stirrer.” He never missed a chance to tease, joke or prank and was beloved for his charming wit, twinkling eyes and mischievous grin.
Big Al is survived by his wife Maria, who put up with him for 47 years. His son, George, wife Katherine and grandchildren, William and Elizabeth. Daughter, Harriett, dogs Blue and Duke, and his feline companion, Felix. He was predeceased by his beloved Boykin Spaniel, Sam.
Big Al’s family was always the center of his big heart. Katherine will miss his good-natured ribbing while George will miss finishing off all the birds his dad missed on their annual hunting trips to TX. William and Elizabeth will miss bragging about who caught the biggest fish, while Papa cooked their catch at their regular Sunday night fish fry. Harriett will miss leading her Dad down treacherous ski slopes while he complained the whole time and then followed her down again. Maria will just miss Al.
