Gloria Brodie King of 409 Chestnut Street, Clinton, S.C., joined her heavenly Father May 13, 2008.
She was born July 11, 1921 in Florence, South Carolina, a daughter of the late Sullivan Alger Brodie and Agnes Clagon Brodie. Gloria and her sister, Leta Fae Beck of North Myrtle Beach, S.C. were raised in Florence, S.C. Known for her popularity and beauty as Florence High School’s “Queen of Hearts,” her education continued at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. where she received a Home Economics degree. It was while attending Furman that she met William Govan King, III. She and Bill were married May 15, 1943 until his death in December of 2001.
Gloria was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday School teacher in the primary department for many years. Involved in her community, she was a key participant in bringing the Camp Fire Girls to Clinton. She organized the Clinton Camp Fire Girls program raising money for their building facility and planning all summer camps.
In mid life Gloria became a teacher at Whitten Center in Clinton. Gloria advanced her career by returning to Clemson University receiving a Master’s Degree in Special Education. Returning to Whitten Center as principal of Hallett School, she perfected her reading specialties in developing programs for the handicapped. At the time of her retirement, she was serving as Director of Education at Whitten Center in Clinton.
Outside of her professional career, she was a devoted mother to her daughters, Kristi and Jan. Gloria was blessed with many talents: sewing, cooking, baking, decorating and designing, all of which she performed with care and perfection.
She will be remembered for her creative entertaining abilities and her always wanting those special touches of care and love for her friends and family, especially her beloved bridge club.
Gloria will be greatly missed by her daughters: Kristin Seward of Pawleys Island, S.C. and Jan Paulling of Rome, GA. She was affectionately called “Ma Ma” by her grandchildren: Leeann Medure of Pawleys Island, Marshall Seward of Pawleys Island, Raegan Taylor of Clinton and Ruffin Paulling of Denver Colorado. She was loved by her seven great-grandchildren: Jordan Taylor, Grayson Taylor, Mackenzie Taylor, Ross Medure, Braxton Medure, Brodie Seward, and Noah Seward.
Services for Gloria B. King will be at the First Presbyterian Church in Clinton on Thursday, May 15th with visitation from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the church parlor following with graveside services at 2:00 p.m. in the church cemetery.
