Hugh E. Tankersley, 95, passed to be with his Lord on May 30, 2006. Hugh was predeceased by his wife, Vallie Mae Welch Tankersley. He was born in Blackwater, Virginia and was the second child of twelve to the late George Taylor (Bill) Tankersley and Florence Hurd Tankersley.
Mr. Tankersley was a charter member of the Clinton Road Wesleyan Church where he was a Sunday school teacher and held many positions in the church. For the past four years he attended and became a member of the Evans St. Church of God, a church and people he loved dearly. Hugh was a former employee of the J.P. Stevens and Cone Mills and was also a barber where in 2001 he was the longest living practicing licensed barber in the state of SC with over 68 years of experience. He was also active in selling produce to the community and was a member of Whitmire Town Council.
He is survived by a son, Elmer Joe Tankersley of Central; two daughters, Ruth McKee and Julia Satcher both of Whitmire; a sister, Frankie Long of Newberry; 8 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and 4 great-great- grandchildren. He had many friends and loved relatives in the community.
Funeral services will be conducted Friday, June 2nd at 2:00 p.m. in the Evans Street Church of God with burial in Whitmire Cemetery.
The family will receive friends Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire.
