Hyman Fitzhugh “Hugh” Stone Jr., 84, a long time resident of Fernandina Beach, FL fought a long and courageous battle against kidney disease and died peacefully under Agape Hospice care July 19, 2008 at the Agape Senior Assisted Living Center in Laurens, SC.
Born May 5, 1924 in Fitzgerald, Georgia, he was the son of the late Bertha B. and H.F. “Snap” Stone, Sr. Mr. Stone graduated from Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, GA and attended Emory University in Atlanta until he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943. Following basic training, he was assigned to the 106th Infantry Division and fought in Germany where he was wounded and received the Combat Infantry Badge. He was owner of the H.F. Stone, Jr. Standard Oil Distributorship, later becoming Chevron, in Fernandina Beach, FL until he retired in 1979.
Hugh was a member of First Baptist Church in Fernandina Beach, Florida. He was past President of the Fernandina Beach Chamber of Commerce and the Community Chest. He served on the Board of Directors for the Florida Baptist Children’s home where he served as President for several years. He was a member of the Board of Directors of First Federal Savings and Loan Co., where he served as treasurer, and Past President of the Fernandina Beach Rotary Club where he had perfect attendance for twenty years. He was Past Master of the Amelia Lodge No. 47, where he had been a member since 1955, the York Rite Bodies and the Morocco Shrine Temple. Proud of his military service, he was a member of the American Legion, V.F.W. and the D.A.V. He was also an active civic leader. He served as trustee of Florida Community College of Jacksonville and two terms as Fernandina Beach City Commissioner.
He was preceded in death by his second wife, Carmen Griner Stone. Surviving are his son Hugh Stone and his wife, Kitty of Laurens, SC; his daughter, Lisa Cunningham and her husband, Steve of Fitzgerald, GA; a sister, Betty Davis of Fernandina Beach, FL; a brother, David Stone of Chiefland, FL; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild, Will Cunningham, his wife, Larkin and their daughter, Landin of Birmingham, AL; Kelly Dillavou and her husband, Shaun of Simpsonville, SC; Ryan Stone and his wife, Jenni of Columbia, SC; Gill Stone and his wife, Heather of Laurens, SC; his first wife, the mother of his children, Nancy Duty of Jacksonville, FL; several nephews and extended family, Alice Kay Brannon of Athens, GA; Kaye Dillard of Athens, GA; JoAnn Jones of Albany, GA; and Patricia Whitfield of Fernandina Beach, FL.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, July 22, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at The First Baptist Church of Fernandina Beach with the Rev. Jeff Overton officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the church before the service. He will be laid to rest beside his wife in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
