Coach Irby Lee Raines, Jr. was born on January 14, 1936 in Whitmire, SC and passed on October 29, 2012.
He was a son of the late Irby Raines, Sr. and the late Pauline Baker Raines.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Rankin Raines, his two children, Abby (Tim) Carroll and Mark (Anita) Raines. His four grandchildren are Chris Raines, Kandace Carroll, Caroline Raines, Will Raines; two brothers, Coach June (Elaine) Raines of Irmo and Coach Eddie (Eunice) Raines of Chapin and his beloved dog, Lady.
Coach Irby graduated from Whitmire High School, Newberry College with a Bachelor Degree and Winthrop University with a Masters Degree.
He was an active member of the Whitmire United Methodist Church. Coach Raines was a dedicated teacher for 36 years. During his coaching career he was Assistant Football Coach for 8 years; Head Basketball Coach for 13 years: won seven Conference Championships, seven time Conference Coach of the Year, won two State Championships 1970 and 1980; named S.C. Coach of the Year in 1980 and was Head Coach of the 1971 North-South All Stars.
Funeral Service will be conducted Thursday, Nov. 1st at 3:00 p.m. in the R. C. Lake Gym with burial in the Whitmire Cemetery.
His two favorite sayings were “Keep it simple” and “The name of the game”.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Whitmire United Methodist Church or the WHS Athletic Booster Club.
Upon Coach’s request any former athletes who would like to be an honorary pallbearer, please do so.
The family will be at the home of Tim and Abby Carroll, 211 N. Main St., Whitmire, SC.
