James J. Bardsley, Ph.D., passed away peacefully on December 16, 2014 with his family by his side. Born December 22, 1931, he was predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Marilyn Butts Bardsley; his parents, John Wallace Sr. and Josephine Hartsock Bardsley; and his brother and sister-in-law, John Wallace Jr. and Sara Jo Bardsley.
A 1950 graduate of Appalachia High School, Dr. Bardsley received a B.S. in Engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and an MBA from the University of Rochester. He later went on to earn his Ph.D. in Business Administration from Syracuse University. His career spanned from his early days as a ceramic engineer at Pfaulder to Vice President of manufacturing at Syroco. Dr. Bardsley retired as Professor Emeritus and chair of Business Administration and Economics at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. Post-retirement, Dr. Bardsley continued to consult professionally with various manufacturing plants in the Myrtle Beach, SC area on quality control.
He served his country in the United States Army from 1956 – 1958 during which he was stationed mainly in Germany.
Dr. Bardsley was a member of many organizations related to his education, career, and personal interests including: Tau Beta Pi (Engineering National Honor Society), Beta Gamma Sigma (Business National Honor Society), Phi Beta Lambda (Nation Business Education Society), National Institute of Ceramic Engineers, American Ceramic Society, Audubon Society, Waccamaw Audubon Society, and the Methodist Church.
Dr. Bardsley was very active in the community, volunteering as a youth baseball coach for the Optimist League in Camillus, NY for nearly a decade. His hobbies and interests included bird watching, golfing, fishing, cross country skiing, and cheering for the Hokies and the Syracuse Orange during basketball season.
Dr. Bardsley is survived by his daughter, Laura Bardsley Houck of Clinton SC; son, James F. Bardsley of Charleston SC; four grandchildren, Madeline Houck Smith, James E. Bardsley, Jason A. Bardsley, and Jordan S. Bardsley; niece, Donna Bardsley of Kingsport TN; and nephew, John Bardsley of Anchorage Alaska.
Celebration of Life services will be held December 27, 2014, 3:00pm, at Presbyterian Home, 801 Musgrove Street, Clinton, SC 29325
