James Morris Smith

James Morris Smith passed peacefully into the arms of the Lord surrounded by family on July 19th in this year of our Lord. As a member of the community and patriarch of his family, his loss will be profoundly felt while the legacy of his life will live on.
He was born in Laurens, SC on March 21st, 1943. He served in the US Navy from 1963 to 1967. James settled in California for a number of years before returning to Laurens with his wife Carolyn and five children. He is a graduate of Piedmont Technical College, Class of 2004.
James was a member of the Second Baptist Church where he helped with Sunday School. He was a master carpenter, and loved to Golf. He also loved to play the piano.
James was preceded in death by his parents Jesse William Smith and Alma (Adams) Smith of Laurens, and one brother, Herb Smith of Greer.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, his daughter Wendee Jefferson of Suffolk, VA; his son John Lammers (and wife Rosalie) of Salinas, CA.; his daughter Tiffany Swygert of Columbia, SC; his son Timothy Smith (and wife Dee) of Honolulu, HI; and his son Clancy Smith of Greenville, SC. Also surviving is his brother Alan Smith of Greer, SC; Kenneth Smith of Greenwood, SC; his sister Alma Jean Pitts of Simpsonville, SC. James is also survived by seven great-grandchildren, eight grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday, July 25th, at 11:00 A.M. at Gray Funeral Home, 500 W. Main St. Laurens, SC 29360.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Second Baptist Church, Laurens.
