James “Ray” Godfrey, Sr., age 91, of 900 Musgrove St., Clinton, SC died Saturday, April 5, 2008 in the N.H.C. of Laurens due to complications of failing health. His beloved wife, Ruth King Godfrey, died August 14, 2001.
Mr. Godfrey was born Jan. 13, 1917 in Gray Court, SC and was a son of the late Samuel Arthur and Inez Howard Godfrey of Greenwood.
He retired as assistant overseer of the card room at Clinton Mills after 48 years of employment.
He was a faithful member of Elizabeth St. Church of God and continued to be active in the church as much as his health would allow. He also was a member of Campbell Lodge # 44 A.F.M. for 39 years.
During the past few years, he enjoyed writing about the simple things in life and the many blessings God gives us. He often said this was his “ministry” to others, as he often passed them out to family, friends, and strangers he would meet.
He leaves to cherish his memory, three sons and their wives: Jim and Judy Godfrey of Easley, SC, David and Gail Godfrey of Gainesville, GA, and Darrell and Pam Godfrey of Columbia, SC; seven grandchildren, James Ray Godfrey, III and Mackey Godfrey of Easley, SC, Amber Godfrey Bland and Chaucer Godfrey of Lexington, SC, D. Lynn Godfrey of Gainesville, GA, Merissa G. Ramantanin and Chara G. Hosom of Inman; 13 great grandchildren and one expectant great-great grandchild.
Also, surviving are two sisters: Irene G. McClain and Rachel G. Harrison (Earl) of Greenwood, SC
Funeral service will be conducted Monday at 3:00 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel with interment at Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends Monday from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
