Joe James Gresham, 74, of Chesapeake, VA, passed away on November 17, 2023. He was born on August 5, 1949, in Greenville, SC, to the late Joe J Gresham and Evelyn Turner Gresham.
Joe was a beloved husband, married to Leann Gresham for 38 years. He is survived by his wife and their children: Leigh Lightsey and her husband Kamen Lightsey of Charleston, SC, Turner Watson of Charleston, SC, William Hickerson of Greenville, SC, and Ashley Hickerson and her wife Kendra Hickerson of Chesapeake, VA. Joe was also a loving grandfather to Cooper and Kaleigh Lightsey, Owen Watson, Ella Strange, Mady Hickerson, and Jackson Drucker. He was preceded in death by his son, Daniel Strange, and granddaughter, Harbor Watson. He had a deep bond with his best friend, James McDowell.
In his educational journey, Joe graduated from Greenville High School in 1967. He then went on to obtain an Associate's Degree from Anderson Junior College and a Bachelor's Degree from Lander University in 1971.
Throughout his career, Joe made lasting connections and friendships. He spent many years in the Mercantile Business, traveling across the state. He owned businesses such as Bargain Fair, Budget Sportswear, and the Carpet Store in Laurens. In 1989, he transitioned to Real Estate, where he became a trusted mentor to many realtors. Joe served on several boards, including real estate boards and the Laurens County Sheriff's Department. He even had experience as a City Farmer, caring for horses and cows.
Joe was passionate about shag dancing and golfing, which allowed him to forge deep connections with others who shared his interests. In 2017, while playing golf with a stranger, Joe had a stroke. The quick actions of his playing partner saved his life. Another significant part of his life was his dedication to prison ministry. For 12 years, he served in the Laurens County Jail and Georgetown County Jail, finding fulfillment in helping others.
A celebration of Joe's life will be held on Monday, November 27, 2023, at 5 PM, at the First United Methodist Church, located at 244 West Main Street in Laurens, SC. Prior to the service, a visitation will be held from 3-5 PM in the First Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Joe James Gresham will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His impact on the community, his devotion to his family, and his unwavering commitment to helping others will be remembered fondly.
