Joel H. Whitsel, Sr., age 69, of 203 McMillian Street, passed away Sunday, February 7, 2016 at the Laurens County Memorial Hospital.
He was born in Joanna and was a son of the late Edgar Allen and Onie Cogsdill Whitsel.
Mr. Whitsel was a graduate of Clinton High School where he will be remembered as an outstanding athlete. Joel loved being a Police Officer and served in law enforcement over 35 years, retiring from the City of Clinton Police Department as Captain. He continued to serve the community after retiring from the police department as part-time City Judge for the City of Clinton. He was a member of the New Horizon Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Lawson Whitsel of the home; his sons, Joey Whitsel of Joanna and Charles Allen Whitsel of Mountville; his step-sons, Brian Keith Summers and Daniel Reid Summers both of Clinton; and nine grandchildren.
In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth Whitsel.
Funeral services will be conducted on Wednesday, February 10th at 2 PM at New Horizon Freewill Baptist Church by Rev. Jack Elders with burial in Pinelawn Memory Gardens.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 PM at Gray Funeral Home of Clinton.
