John Michael (Mike) Reddeck, 73, of Clinton, SC died January 11, 2019, surrounded by family, after a hard-fought battle with cancer.
Mike was born on October 3rd, 1945 in Rome, GA to Lawrence (Pinky) Smith Reddeck, Jr. and Sarah Evelyn (Peggy) Pitts Reddeck. He grew up in Clinton and graduated from Clinton High School in 1963, where he played football and baseball. He also played trumpet in the band, was a member of the Devilares Band, and was voted “Most Likely to Succeed.” In June of 1968, Mike received a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from the University of South Carolina, was commissioned as an officer in the US Marine Corps through the Naval ROTC program, and was stationed in Quantico, VA. He married the love of his life, Patricia Dianne Asbill in June 1968. Upon his discharge from the Corps, he was appointed City Engineer for Fredericksburg, VA and later became the Director of Public Works for Spotsylvania County, VA. As a licensed engineer, Mike provided engineering services to the public in addition to being employed by George A. Reid Construction when he returned to Clinton. He later accepted the position of Director of Public Works for the City of Clinton, which he held until retirement.
A hard-working individual, Mike lived to serve others. Whether it was sharing vegetables from his garden, helping someone with a project, or repairing something at the church, he was never happier than when he was helping others. Mike was well-known for doing things the right way. One-sixteenth of an inch off was never good enough. If he was involved in doing it, it was going to be done "dead right." Mike was an avid Gamecock fan and enjoyed watching USC football and baseball. Over the years, he loved playing the guitar and mandolin, playing tennis, riding horses, and sailing with his family and friends. Upon retirement, he especially enjoyed working in his garden, playing with his grandsons, and spending time with family.
Mike will be remembered as one who loved and served God, family, friends, his church, the Clinton community, and his country. An active member of Broad Street United Methodist Church, he served in numerous capacities including chairman of the Board of Trustees for many years. He also served on the Board of Directors for the SC Association of Municipal Power Systems and served locally as Chairman of the Board of the YMCA.
Mike was predeceased by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Dianne Asbill Reddeck, as well as his daughter, Jessica (Charlie) Reddeck Stinson. There was never a more devoted husband and father. He was also a loving grandfather to his two grandsons, Hayden and Cooper. He loved throwing the football, building forts, taking hikes and road trips, and having target practice with them. Mike is also survived by his brother, Larry Griffin (Paula) Reddeck of Lake City, SC, and his two nieces, Claire Reddeck (Aaron) Bowman and Mary Lauren Reddeck (Kyle) Smith, and one great-nephew, Blake. On Dianne’s side, he is survived by a brother-in-law, Roland Tidwell, four sisters-in-law, Willette (Silas) Campbell, Shirley (Alvin) Hampton, Nancy Asbill, and Juanita Neely, and many loving nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by brothers-in-law, Brunson Asbill, Jr. and James R. Neely, and sister-in-law, Carolyn Tidwell.
The family truly appreciates all of the caring support from his friends and his church and the wonderful care Mike received at Hospice of Laurens County in Clinton.
