John F. (Johnny) Roche, Sr., age 80, of 208 Union St. died December 7, 2008 in the Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union.
He was born in Abbeville and was the son of the late Joseph Edward and Jennie Mae Jones Roche.
Mr. Roche was the owner of Roche Pharmacy, was a devoted member of St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Newberry. He served on the board of Trustees for the Whitmire Schools, was a member of the Whitmire Jaycees and served on the Town Council and the Newberry County School Board from 1959 to 1965 and 1969 to 2008 (chairman from 1971 to 1988). He has had the distinguished honor of receiving the Bowl of Hygeia award in 1994 which recognizes pharmacists nationwide for their outstanding community service. In 1995 he was named the USC College of Pharmacy Alumnus of the year and also was a W.W. II U.S. Navy veteran.
He is survived by his wife, Louise Day Roche of the home; daughters and sons-in-law, Angie and Randy Thompson, Jennie and the late Steven Pozzuto, Judy and Mike Shealy, Beth and Robby Bell and Susan and Danny Hendrix; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Kay Roche; grandchildren, Alison and husband, Jason Cody, Jeremy Thompson, Alan Thompson, Ryan and his wife, Robin Elsmore, Patrick and wife, Allison Pozzuto, Diana Pozzuto, George Pozzuto, Maria and husband, Ken Dickerson, Melissa and husband, Derrick Gilliam, Kyle Shealy, Galen Roche, Sheila Roche, Blake Roche, Mary Bell, Austin Bell, Joseph Bell, Elizabeth Bell, Casey Hendrix, Bradon Hendrix and Will Hendrix; great grandchildren, Cole Whitmire, Angela Cody, Riley Elsmore, Morgan and Ava Pozzuto, Jacob and Micah Dickerson, Isabella and Rhett Gilliam, Kaylynn Roche and Kennedy Hendrix; a sister, Sarah Jefferies and a brother, Pat Roche both of Abbeville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brothers and sister, Ed, James, Bill and Elizabeth.
A memorial service will be held on Monday at 5:00 p.m. in the First Baptist Church of Whitmire where the family will receive friend immediately after the service.
A Rosary service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Newberry.
The interment will take place in the church cemetery.
