John Lindsey (“Johnny”) Grant, Jr., 66, of Prosperity, South Carolina, died at home on Thursday, June 17, 2010. He was predeceased by his parents, the late John L. Grant, Sr. and Elsie Moore Grant; a brother, Richard (“Red”) Gibbs Grant; and a sister, Helen Louise Grant Peak. He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Lynne Oswald Grant; a daughter, Angela R. Grant of Raleigh, North Carolina; a sister, Dorothy (“Dot”) Grant Miskelly of Newberry, South Carolina; a brother-in-law, Kenneth A. Oswald of Bradley, South Carolina; as well as several nieces and a nephew.
Mr. Grant attended Whitmire High School, where he was the then-youngest member of the Wolverine varsity football team. Thereafter, he utilized his entrepreneurial skills by establishing and operating several privately owned business including retail and restaurant establishments, a commercial egg production facility, a video coin-operated machine business and, most recently, a residential property management company. He refused to retire, believing that remaining active adds meaning and happiness to one’s life.
Mr. Grant was a life-long member of Whitmire United Methodist Church, a member and Master Mason of Newberry Amity Lodge #87, as well as a member of Hejaz Shrine Temple of Mauldin, South Carolina, and the Newberry Shrine Club of Newberry, South Carolina.
Funeral services will be held at Whitmire United Methodist Church in Whitmire, South Carolina, on Sunday, June 20, 2010 at 5 PM. The Rev. Jim Williams, pastor of Whitmire United Methodist Church, will officiate. The family will receive friends at Gray Funeral Home in Whitmire immediately following the service. The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Palmetto Health Hospice, the American Cancer Society or Whitmire United Methodist Church.
