Lana Copeland Dick, 93, died October 23, 2024 at the Presbyterian Home in Clinton, SC. “Copie” was born May 26, 1931 at the old hospital on Woodrow Street and spent her early youth in Clinton. She spent her later youth in Raleigh and then returned to Clinton in the 1960’s to spend the remainder of her life. Copie dearly loved and was deeply devoted to the entire Clinton community.
Copie was the daughter of the late Reverend and Mrs. James McDowell Dick (Sara Elizabeth Young) formerly of Raleigh, NC. A lifelong Episcopalian, her father was the rector of The Church of The Good Shepherd in Raleigh and since her return to Clinton, Copie has been a devoted member of All Saints Episcopal Church.
Copie was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. James McDowell Dick (Margaret Bentley Fraser) of Sumter, SC, and Plantersville, SC, and Dr. and Mrs. Jack Holland Young (Lana Copeland) of Clinton. She attended Ravenscroft Episcopal School in Raleigh, Saint Katherine’s Episcopal School in Richmond, VA, and graduated from Stratford College in Danville, VA. She was a former member of the Raleigh Junior League. She made her debut in 1952 at The Terpsichorean Ball in Raleigh.
Copie’s life revolved around her church and family, including Irene “Didene” Byrd Price, who cared for Copie from Copie’s birth until Didene’s death in 1995.
Copie is remembered for her kind soul, good nature, and the treasures of the sharp memories she shared of people and of long-ago events (such as riding horses all over Clinton from the family retreat Happy Acres). She loved to keep busy with painting, crochet, and knitting caps for babies at hospitals, and in her younger years was an avid gardener.
“Aunt Copie” was dearly loved by her four nieces and nephews: Elizabeth Young Wyman, Frank (Bubba) James Wyman III, James McDowell Wyman (Anne), and Anne Lucas Maybank Wyman Taylor (Brian); and by her 11 surviving grand nieces and nephews: Sam Crews, Margaret Crews Baddour, Copeland Crews (Aunt Copie’s namesake), Frank Wyman IV, Dawson Wyman, Maggie Wyman, Olivia Wyman, McDowell Wyman, Langhorne Wyman, William Taylor, and Banks Taylor. She is pre-deceased by her sister and brother-in-law Dr. and Mrs. Frank James Wyman (Margaret McDowell Dick) of Columbia, S.C. She is also survived by a great grandnephew and two great grandnieces.
All who knew Copie, loved her. She was a dear and courageous person, who was deeply and earnestly interested in the lives of everyone she knew. Copie cherished friends and cherished making new friends. Her steadfast devotion to being kind to all was surely unique and, along with her ever-present smile, will be missed.
Services for Miss Copie Dick will be held at All Saints Episcopal Church in Clinton, November 2 at 2:00 pm, with burial following at First Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Clinton.
Memorials may be made to the All Saints Episcopal Memorial Fund, 505 Calvert Ave. Clinton, SC 29325.
