Lewis Riley Gilmer, age 87, went home to be with the Lord on November 26, 2014.
He was born in Belton, South Carolina to Robert Rayon Gilmer and Mattie Mae Stowe on November 25, 1927.
Mr. Gilmer retired from Greenwood Mills (Joanna Plant) after 42 years of service and the South Carolina National Guard with 41 years of service. He was a dedicated Cub Master to Cub Scout Troop 194 and the last Scout Master of Troop 138 sponsored by Clinton Mills. He was awarded the outstanding Cub Master of the year in the early seventies. He was also active in the organizing of Laurens County Rescue Squad 56.
Mr. Gilmer faithfully attended Calvary Baptist Church and was a member of the Welcome Sunday School Class and was known with affection as Mr. G in his neighborhood.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Peggy Webb Gilmer; a son, Jon Giles Gilmer (Tina) of Clinton and a daughter, Jackie Gilmer Vincent (Gary) of Joanna; five grandchildren, Samantha Vincent Smaltz of Joanna, Libba Vincent Cooley (Gary) of Laurens, Joshua Lee Gilmer (Alyssa) of Clinton, Branden Michael Brotherton of Greenville, and Katie Ann Brotherton of Clinton; ten great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Elizabeth Flick of Clinton and Madge Marie Sisk of Columbia.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers, Elijah Ellison Gilmer and Alvin Wilbert Gilmer, and one sister Elvia Ophelia Mitchell and six other siblings.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 29 at 12:00 PM at Calvary Baptist Church.
The family will receive friends following the memorial service at Calvary Baptist Church.
The family will be at the home of his daughter, at 115 Reeder Street, Joanna, SC 29325.
