Lois Forbes Morgan Hellams

February 13, 1919 — February 21, 2013

Lois Forbes Morgan Hellams CLINTON – Lois Forbes Morgan Hellams, age 94, of 600 Calvert Avenue, Clinton, SC, formerly of Laurens, and widow of Charles Hellams, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 21, 2013 at Laurens County Hospital.

Lois was born February 13, 1919, in Danville, VA, and was the daughter of Arch Cleveland and Blanch Forbes Morgan. She married the late Gideon Charles Hellams in 1936 and lived in Danville and Charlottesville, before relocating to Laurens in the late 1950s. After moving to Laurens, she worked at the Laurens County Hospital on Farley Avenue and retired as director of housekeeping and purchasing after 22 years of service.

Lois spent her life serving others. She loved her church, her family and her friends. She was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Laurens, where she served as president of the United Methodist Women for over 20 years and was an avid supporter of church missions. She was an expert seamstress and baker. She enjoyed sewing for her family and friends, and even designed her granddaughters’ wedding dresses. At age 93, she was still using her original 1943 Singer sewing machine. She is best known for her famous sour cream pound cake, and always found the time and strength to help others. She was an avid reader, loved to travel, and cherished her independence. She lived in her own home and was still driving her car until the last week of her life.

Lois had two children, three grandchildren, and ten great-grandchildren, and was affectionately known by many as “Mama Lois”.

She is survived by her daughter, Sarah Hellams Pitts of Clinton, SC, three grandchildren and their spouses: Benjamin Thomas Pitts and wife Janice of Birmingham, Alabama; Lydie Pitts Jennings and husband Archie of Washington, NC; and Elizabeth Pitts Craven and husband Buddy of Clinton, SC. Mama Lois is also survived by ten adoring great-grandchildren: Kevin, Leslie, Alexandra and Ashley Pitts; Sarah, Neill and Henry Jennings; and Olivia, Matthew and Charlie Craven.

She was predeceased by a son, Richard Jerome Hellams, and three brothers: Arch C. Morgan, Jr., John P. “Jack” Morgan, and Garland P. Morgan.

The memorial service will be conducted at First United Methodist Church, Laurens, SC, on Sunday February 24th at 2 o'clock by Rev. Alice MacKeil.

The family will receive friends after the service in the Fellowship Hall and celebrate Lois’ life with dessert and coffee. A private family burial will follow at Laurens City Cemetery. The family would like to thank Kathy Lowman for her special care and love of Mrs. Hellams.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 203, Laurens, SC 29360.
