Colonel Lykes Shelton Henderson, Jr. died on August 30, 2014, after a courageous battle with cancer. Born on May 3, 1946, in Albany, Georgia, he was the son of the late Lt. Colonel Lykes Shelton and Ruth Moyer Henderson.
Col. Henderson’s family returned to Clinton, South Carolina, in 1960, and he graduated from Clinton High School. He received a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Management from Clemson University in 1968. He later received a Master of Science in Logistics, Materials and Supply Chain Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology’s Graduate School of Engineering and Management.
Col. Henderson served his country as a decorated officer in the United States Air Force from 1968 until 1993, stationed at bases in Germany, Saudi Arabia, and various locations in the United States. He especially enjoyed his service at the Pentagon. Following his retirement from the Air Force in 1993, he returned to Clinton, and served for fourteen years as the Executive Director of the Clinton Presbyterian Homes.
Col. Henderson was very active in both his community and his church, First Presbyterian Church of Clinton. He served as an elder, and was the chair of the 1997-1999 building program. Most recently, he co-chaired the pastor Nominating Committee. He was an active volunteer and past chairman of the board for Hospice of Laurens County. He served as the co-moderator of the CHAMPS steering committee. He was a past president of the Rotary Club of Clinton, and served as treasurer of the Ferguson Meditation Garden. He was a past treasurer of the South Carolina Alzheimer’s Association, and an at-large member of the South Carolina Advisory Council on Aging.
Col. Henderson is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Susan Turner Henderson; sons, Lykes Shelton Henderson III (Mary) of Philidelphia, Daniel Carter Henderson (Hu Xiao) of Guiyang, China, and Thomas Rudd Henderson (Jessicca) of Greenville; and sisters, Carolyn Hollingsworth and Irene Henderson, both of Clinton. He was predeceased by his two brothers, Noland William Henderson and Lewis Moyer Henderson.
After a private committal service, a celebration of Colonel Henderson’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 2, at First Presbyterian Church, Clinton.
There will be a reception in the Fellowship Hall following the service.
