Margaret Virginia Cubine, 93, of Clinton, SC died on Saturday, June 16, 2012. She was born March 28, 1919 in Walker County, Georgia, the daughter of Ralph and Genia Cubine. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings-- brothers Pat, George, and RD Cubine and (William)Frank and George (Jack) Martin and sisters Lillian Martin Roberts and Elizabeth Cubine Hoover, as well as nieces Brenda Cubine Slater and Susan Cubine DeLozier and nephews Gerald Cubine, Darrell Cubine and Patrick Hoover. She is survived by sisters-in-law, Delora Cubine of Chattanooga, TN and Beth Martin of El Cajon, CA, nieces, Virginia Hoover McBlain (David), LaVista, NE and Melanie Hoover Wise (David), San Francisco, CA and Hoover nephews, Michael (Patricia), Spring Hill, FL, Ralph (Laura), The Plains, VA, Kevin (Catherine), Hillsborough, NC, Brian (Carol), Vienna, VA and Christopher, San Francisco, CA and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.
Dr. Cubine attended Chattanooga Valley Elementary and High School. She graduated from LaGrange College. She earned graduate degrees from the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill), Northwestern University , including a PhD from Garrett Theological Seminary. She began her teaching career at Chattanooga Valley High School and taught at several public schools in Georgia and North Carolina and several colleges before accepting a position on the faculty at her alma mater, LaGrange College. In 1961 she took a position as professor of Bible and Religion at Erskine College, in Due West, SC and remained on the faculty for twenty-eight years until she retired in 1989. She was presented with “Honorary Membership Erskine Alumni Association” in recognition of service and devotion to Erskine and the community at the 2012 graduation exercises.
She was an active member of North Anderson Community Church, Presbyterian in Anderson, South Carolina.
In her later years she moved to the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Clinton, SC.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 7, 2012 at 11 AM at the North Anderson Community Church, 4200 Liberty Highway, Anderson, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to North Anderson Community Church, Presbyterian.
