Services for Margie Young Leaman will be held 5 pm on Sunday, August 3 at the United Methodist Church in Whitmire. Visitation with the family will be Saturday evening from 6 pm – 8 pm at Gray funeral home in Whitmire.
Mrs. Leaman died August 1, 2014 at Hospice of Laurens County in Clinton, SC due to a recent illness. Born February 21, 1924 in Whitmire, SC, she was the daughter of the late Samuel Copeland Young and the late Sallie Gilliam Young. She was married to James Marshall Leaman, the love of her life, until his death in 2003.
She was preceded in death by her three siblings, Harry Samuel Young, Carolyn Young Lake, and Thomas Lindsay Young.
Mrs. Leaman retired from J.P. Stevens textile plant in Whitmire after 19 years of service. She also taught accounting for the Whitmire High School Adult Education program. She and her husband owned and operated Leaman Oil Company in Whitmire.
Mrs. Leaman is an alumna of Whitmire High School class of 1941 and a 1945 graduate of Presbyterian College. She enjoyed sports her entire life. She was still water skiing in her 40's and playing golf into her 80's. At age 76, she volunteered for the church softball team when it was announced at the Sunday service they had not had enough interest to form a team. While in high school, she lettered four years in basketball. In 2011, Whitmire High School inducted her into their Athletic Hall of Fame.
Mrs. Leaman enjoyed good health up until her recent illness. She was fiercely independent and still enjoyed living at home and driving herself. She enjoyed playing bridge her entire life. When her bridge club in Whitmire ceased to exist she was delighted to join a bridge club in Clinton where she played and socialized until her recent illness.
She left behind many, many family and friends who loved her dearly, including the following nieces and nephews – Jane Young Ringer (Pomaria), Margie Young Martin (Clinton) , Beth Young Grammer (Columbia), Sallie Young Hunter (Greenville), Robert Campbell Lake III (Prosperity), and Samuel Young Lake (Blythewood).
Gray Funeral Home in Clinton, SC is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials may be made to the United Methodist Church of Whitmire, the Linda Lake Scholarship Fund at Columbia College, or a charity of your choice.
