Marietta Phillips Scarborough

April 25, 1935 — November 12, 2023

Marietta Phillips Scarborough, age 88, passed away Sunday, November 12, 2023 at the Presbyterian Home of Clinton.
Marietta is the daughter of Otis and Blanche Phillips of Greensboro, NC. She was born in Lexington, NC in 1935 but lived in Greensboro, NC most of her childhood. Marietta graduated from Greensboro High School and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a BA in Elementary Education. After college, Marietta moved to Virginia Beach, VA where she taught 4th grade at Thalia Elementary School. She moved to Perry, GA in 1959 where she taught 4th grade at Perry Elementary School before her children were born.
Marietta was an active member of the Perry Presbyterian Church where she attended Sunday School and other church activities. She loved playing bridge with her great friends!
She is survived by her son Ray Scarborough and wife Tracie of Clinton, SC, daughter Angela Abney and husband Bud Abney of Cornelius, NC, and sister Joan Best of Warsaw, NC. She is survived by four grandchildren – Joe Scarborough of Atlanta, GA, Molly Pitts and husband Kendall Pitts of Clinton, SC, Taylor Marie Abney of Brooklyn, NY, and Kennedy Abney of Asheville, NC. She is also survived by one great grandchild, Amelia Blake Pitts. Other survivors are nephew Dr. Steve Kelly and wife Beth of Tallahassee, FL, niece Susan Taylor and husband Doug Taylor of Winston Salem, NC, and brother-in-law Nelson Kelly of Greensboro, NC.
Marietta was preceded in death by her beloved twin sister Marie Phillips Kelly of Greensboro, NC.
