Marion Hill Weersing

November 27, 1914 — March 8, 2017

Marion Hill Weersing, age 102, passed away quietly in her sleep on Wednesday, March 8, 2017 at the Presbyterian Community. Marion was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Marc C. Weersing, past president of Presbyterian College where Marion served as the first Dean of Women and Associate Dean of Students from 1964 to 1980.
Marion received her Bachelor of Arts from Belhaven College in Jackson, MS and her Masters of Arts from George Peabody in Nashville, TN. In 1994 Presbyterian College awarded Marion an Honorary Doctorate of Humanities for her many contributions to the college, and in 2004 she was named an honorary alumna by the PC Alumni Association. Prior to her tenure at Presbyterian College, Marion was a Director of Christian Education of the Presbyterian Church USA serving in Monticello, AR; Jackson, MS; and First Presbyterian in Spartanburg, SC. She was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton where she served as an Elder of the Church. Marion was elected to serve as both Moderator of the South Carolina Presbytery and Moderator of Synod of the South Atlantic.
Born in Brookhaven, MS, Marion was the daughter of the late Rev. William H. and Mary Fogartie Hill. One of eight siblings, Marion was preceded in death by sisters, Beth H. McGee, Ruth H. Mansell, Margaret H. Edwards, Rachel H. Owens, Adeline H. Ostwalt, Gene H. McDaniel and one brother William Hill, Jr. Marion is survived by her step-children Marcia W. Lyons and Barry Weersing and her sister-in-law, Anne M. Hill. She leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and their children who had the privilege of experiencing her quiet confidence and her deep love of church and family. A positive example of encouragement to all who knew her, Marion will be missed by family, colleagues, church members and a multitude of friends.
A Memorial service will be held Sunday, March 12, 2017 at 3 PM the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the Fellowship Hall. In lieu of flowers the family has requested memorial gifts be made to the First Presbyterian Church Weekday Preschool Scholarship Fund, 410 E. Carolina Avenue, Clinton, SC 29325.
