Marvin L. Nelson, age 77, of 1761 Bellview Church Road, passed away Monday, November 16, 2015 at Hospice Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood, after a short battle with cancer.
He was a lifelong resident of Laurens County, and was the son of the late Joe Reid and Clarice Baker Nelson.
Mr. Nelson was retired from his cattle farm, Laurens County Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service, Soil Conservation District and Penland and Nelson. He was a former Board Member of the Laurens Farm Bureau Insurance Company and a member of Noba, Inc., Noba Serviceman and recognized as The Outstanding Young Farmer in 1963 by the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce.
He was a member of Langston Baptist Church where he was Music Director and maintained the grounds and maintenance of the church. He enjoyed singing, NASCAR, and everything about the country and his cattle. The joy of his life was his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth Fulmer Nelson of the home; his daughter, Ruth Marlynn Nelson Powell and husband George Clark Powell of Laurens; his sons, Marvin Lewis Nelson, Jr. (Marty) of Laurens and James Aaron Nelson and wife, Dawn McKittrick Nelson of Clinton; ten grandchildren, Melanie Ruth Powell Zwan (David Zwan), Michelle Rose Powell, Benjamin Seth Powell, Hannah Vivian Powell, Rebekah Victoria Powell, Corrie Elisabeth Powell, Anna Joe Powell, Marvin Isaac Powell, James Aaron Nelson (Lizz Moore Nelson) of Greenville and William Lee Nelson of Sumter; four great-grandchildren, Asher Joseph Zwan, Sophia Yael Zwan, Simon Joshua Zwan and Annie Hayes Nelson.
Marvin is also survived by a brother, Roger Nelson of Laurens.
He was predeceased by a brother, Joel Eugene Nelson and a sister, Elaine Nelson.
A memorial service will be conducted by Rev. Roger Smith and Rev. Ken Weathers, on Saturday, November 21st at 3 PM at Langston Baptist Church, 1474 Langston Church Rd., Clinton, SC 29325.
The family will receive friends after the service, at the church.
