Dateline-Clinton, South Carolina Mary Campbell Nelson, widow of Bob Wess Nelson, passed away peacefully with family at her side on Sunday, December 6, 2020. She was 87 years old. She was born in Clifton, South Carolina on December 3, 1933, to the late Henry Allen Campbell and Mae Garland Campbell. Mary moved to Clinton with her family when she was a baby.
Mary was a faithful member of Holly Grove Baptist Church for many years serving in any capacity in which she was needed. She had a beautiful smile and a servant’s heart.
Mary’s most treasured roles in life were as wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was an avid gardener and a talented seamstress. She thoroughly enjoyed being outdoors and passed this love of the outdoors along to her children and grandchildren. She and her husband, Bob, enjoyed camping at the seashore, the mountains, and the lake for many years.
Mary is survived by three children: Ellen Nelson, JoAn Nelson Ball (Carl), and Robert Wessley Nelson, six grandchildren: Dawn Barrett Sherfield (Reid), Marcus Hodge (Meghan), Daniel Ball (Jessica), Colton Hodge, Margaret Hodge Nowell (Mark), Catherine Ball, eight great-grandchildren: Dillon Sherfield, Kaitlin Sherfield-Tarver (Joshua), Jessica Sherfield, Grayson Ball, Marilyn Ball, Lorelai Nowell, Waylon Ball, Weston Nowell, her sister: Lois Campbell Burden, and many much-loved nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and her parents, Mary is predeceased by her daughter, Anita Nelson Barrett, and her brothers, Millard Henry (Bud) Campbell and William Allen Campbell.
A private burial service will be held at a later date. Memorials may be made to Holly Grove Baptist Church, 92 Holly Grove Church Rd, Laurens, SC 29360. Condolences may be expressed online at www.grayfuneralhome.com .
