Mary H. Sutherland, 85, died on September 22, 2013, at Presbyterian Home. Born November 13, 1927, in York County, she was the daughter of the late Nannie Dickson Harper and Carl Brown Harper. She was the widow of John J. Sutherland who died in 2001.
She graduated from Clover High School and King’s Business College in Charlotte, NC. Her work history included the FBI Office in Charlotte, NC, and the U.S. Postal Committee, Chaired by Senator Olin D. Johnston, in Washington, DC. Before her retirement she worked with her husband John in their CPA business.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Clinton. Before her health declined she was very active in Presbyterian Women and Circle. She was involved with a group that connected First Presbyterian families with PC students. She became close friends with two PC students and continued to keep in touch with them following their graduation.
She volunteered numerous hours each week performing clerical and receptionist duties in the office of Hospice of Laurens County, United Ministries, Memorial Home, and other organizations. She sewed lap robes for soldiers wounded in the Iraqi War. She attended many events in support of Thornwell Home for Children.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Kathryn Carden (Robert) of Easley and granddaughters, Rebekah L. Carden and Rachel C. Carden. Also surviving her are sisters Millie H. Dickerson of York, Anne H. Bray of Indiana, and Nancy H. Biggerstaff of Spartanburg and brother Carl B. Harper of Isle of Palms.
She was predeceased by sisters Frances H. Johnston of Lake Wylie and Nell H. Dunn of Sylva, NC, brother James S. Harper of Fayetteville, NC, and three infant grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, October 20, at 2:00 p.m. in the Chapel at Presbyterian Home, 801 Musgrove Street, Clinton, SC 29325. The family will receive friends following the service.
