Mary Olive Stewart Arthur

Mary Olive Stewart Arthur, age 98, died Wednesday, May 26, 2010 at the home of her son, the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur, in Greenville, SC. Born January 2, 1912, and raised in Fairchance, PA, she was the daughter of Edward Johnson Stewart and Leona Deffenbaugh Stewart.

She married Byron Blake Arthur, September 24, 1934. For the next forty three years she and “Barry” resided in Fairchance where she was employed as secretary at the Albert Wilson Elementary School, and prior to that with Metzlers Department Store in Uniontown.

In 1977, following her husband’s death she moved from southwestern Pennsylvania and enjoyed happy years of retirement, a growing circle of friends, memorable travels, and many good hands of bridge in Washington, DC for a decade, and then for a similar period in Coconut Creek, FL, prior to entering the Presbyterian Home at Clinton, SC, where she resided from 2003-2009.

Mary delighted in her many friendships and will be long remembered for her out-going nature which led her to leadership positions in many organizations. She was a member, and past regent of the Col. Andrew Lynn Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, a member, Worthy Matron, and Secretary of Laurette Chapter 178, O. E. S., past Deputy Grand Matron of the Pennsylvania Grand Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She served on the Board of the National Capital Area Women’s Auxiliary of The Salvation Army and was an elder in the Wheaton Presbyterian Church, Silver Spring, MD. During her years in Florida, she was President of The Christian Club at Wyndmoor Leisure World and an elder at Christ Presbyterian Church, Coconut Creek, FL.

She is predeceased by her husband Byron Blake Arthur, her son Dr. Marcus Stewart Arthur, and her sister, Frieda LaRue Stewart Teets. She is survived by her son the Rev. Dr. William L. Arthur, and his wife Susanne Gabriel Arthur; a granddaughter, Mrs. Amy Arthur Schaible and her husband Maynard; a grandson William David Arthur and his wife Shannon; and three great-grandchildren: Mary Elizabeth Schaible, Sarah Margaret Schaible and William Maynard Schaible.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held in the Chapel of the First Presbyterian Church, Spartanburg, SC, Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow later at Jacob’s Lutheran Church, Masontown, PA.
