Miriam Hall Ray Hodges age 81, widow of the late William Luther Ray and the late John Kenneth Hodges, respectively died peacefully at the home of her daughter in Sumter, SC on Saturday, August 17, 2013, after a long battle with heart disease.
She was born on May 13, 1932 in Whitmire, SC and was the daughter of the late Margaret Christian Hall Johnson and Carlton Edward Hall.
She was educated in the public schools of Whitmire, SC and attended nursing school at Mercy College in Charlotte, NC. She worked in Fort Jackson, SC at Shaw AFB, SC and then as the Housing Officer for the US Government in Aviano, Italy where she retired.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joannie Ray of Suches, GA, a brother, William Douglas Hall of Charleston, SC, sister-in-law, Betty Ruth Hall of Charleston, SC and a grandson, John K. Hodges, III of Pensacola, FL.
Left to cherish her memories are her brother, Carlton C. Hall (Judy) of Whitmire, SC; her daughters, Jeannie Ray Privett of Winchester, VA, Jackie Ray Wingard of Turbeville, SC (Randy), Jane Ray Townsend of Loganville, GA, Jill Ray Schreiber (Jim) of Sumter, SC, Dawn Hodges Weldon Hilligas of Texas, and one son, John Kenneth Hodges Jr. (Cindy) of Louisiana, fifteen grandchildren , seven great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 24th at 4:00 p.m. the Gray Funeral Home Chapel of Whitmire with burial in the Whitmire Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Dalzell United Methodist Church (Homeless Fund), PO Box 85 Dalzell, SC 29040.
The family will receive friends an hour before the service at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
