Nancy Griffin Von Hollen
Nancy Griffin Von Hollen, wife of S. James Von Hollen, died at National Health Care in Clinton on Friday, January 13, 2006.
She was born in Mount Lebanon, PA, on October 12, 1929, and she was the daughter of the late Richard Simpson and Gertrude Keefer Griffin.
After graduating with a degree in music from Marshall University, where she accompanied the school choir and was president of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority; a member of Mortar Board and was named to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities, she accepted a position as Supervisor of Music for Laurens County School District 56 and she remained in that position for two years before teaching piano privately.
In the 1960’s Mrs. Von Hollen was the piano/organ accompanist for the Clinton Community Chorus and later for the Laurens County Chorale. She served as interim organist for the First Presbyterian Church of Clinton on several occasions and as guest organist at many other churches in the area.
In 1997 she, along with her husband, donated the house at 400 North Broad Street, which had been the lifelong home of her cousin, Collette Griffin Coleman, to the City of Clinton. It is now known as The Griffin House and houses the Clinton Museum.
An avid tennis player, Nancy enjoyed playing competitively with the local ladies tennis teams. She was a charter member of the Clinton Cotillion Club and the Meligram Club and a longtime member of The Actaeon Club.
In addition to her husband of 53 years, she is survived by sons Dirke Von Hollen and wife, Katherine of Savannah, GA; Stephen Von Hollen and wife, Julie Ann Avin of Columbia, SC; and daughter Nancy V. Richards and husband, Christopher of Columbia, SC. She is also survived by three grandchildren; John Von Hollen of Athens, GA, Hayley Von Hollen of Boone, NC, and Eric Von Hollen of Columbia, SC.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Clinton, Sunday, January 15th at 3:30 p.m. after which the family will receive friends in the Church Parlor.
