Nell Evans Bowling
Nell Evans Bowling, age 92, beloved mother of Jymmie Nell Pitts and Jerrie Lynn Bowling passed into Eternal Rest on October 12, 2008. She was born on the Evan’s Farm near Central, S.C. on March 10, 1916, the seventh of ten children of John and Minnie Evans. She attended local schools, graduating from Central High School and Wesleyan Methodist College. She taught elementary school until her marriage in 1935 to James G. Bowling. Nell traveled with her husband over the southeast with his profession until they settled in Laurens, S.C. to raise their family and open the Bootery in Laurens and later in Greenwood. She and Jim lived in Laurens for over 50 years until they moved to Wesley Commons in Greenwood to be near their daughters.
Nell and Jim were long time members of the First Baptist Church in Laurens. Nell was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and business woman and enjoyed civic work with her husband.
Nell was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, James G. Bowling; brothers, Dee, Warren and Furman Evans; sisters, Bertha Morgan, Nettie Link , Ann Vissage, Alma Holden and Corrie L. Maloney.
She is survived by her daughters, Jymmie Nell and son-in-law, Gerald Y. Pitts and Jerrie Lynn Bowling of Greenwood; 5 grandchildren, Traci and her husband, Chris Pratt of San Diego, CA, Jim and his wife Sherri Pitts of Simpsonville, Anna Grace Brabham of Atlanta, GA, Gerald B. and his wife, Jennifer Bartless Pitts of Spartanburg and Evan and his wife, Tracy Pitts of Gainesville, FL; 8 great grandchildren, a sister, Margaret Evans Stewart of Easley and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Gray Funeral Home Chapel with interment in the Westview Memorial Park.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:30 to 2:00 at the funeral home.
