Olin Cannon Johnson, age 97, widower of Gertrude Cannon Johnson, died Thursday, September 23 at Martha Franks Retirement Center. Before moving to Martha Franks he was a life-long resident of Clinton.
He was born in Laurens County on February 17, 1913, the son of the late John Burr and Sarah Lillian Horton Johnson.
He was retired from Greenwood Mills and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Clinton for over 65 years and was more recently a member of First Baptist Church in Laurens. He was a World War II veteran serving in England with the 467th Bombardment Group, 8th US Army Air Force.
He was the last surviving member of his immediate family, and surviving are a son Michael O. Johnson and wife Mary Kathryn of Winston-Salem, NC; a daughter Rita J. Bixler and husband Alfred Lyon Bixler, Jr. of Laurens; grandchildren Alfred Lyon Bixler III and wife Georgia of Charleston, Cannon Todd Bixler and wife Jessica of Greenville, Kathryn Elizabeth Johnson of Charlotte, and Matthew Warren Johnson of Winston-Salem; four sisters-in-law Grace Johnson, Frances Johnson, Clarice Johnson, Jean Johnson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
He is predeceased by six brothers, Albert, Raymond, Robert, John Burr, William, and Roy; and a sister Mary Lou Ferguson.
The family would like to acknowledge with grateful appreciation the wonderful care and support provided to Olin and Gertrude by the staff at Martha Franks.
A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, September 26, 2010 at 2:30 pm at Martha Franks Rasor Chapel and the family will receive friends immediately following the service.
