O'Neill Courtney Bowling

November 29, 1923 — October 19, 2006

O’Neill Courtney Bowling, age 82, left to be with her Heavenly Father on October 19, 2006. Daughter of Albert and Florence McCall Courtney, she was born November 29, 1923 in Clover and was raised in Lowrys, SC. She graduated from high school at age 15 and from beauty school at age 16. At 17, she moved to Whitmire and bought Farah’s Beauty Shop, which became Whitmire Beauty Shop.
O’Neill leaves a daughter, Dr. Becky Bond-Hirsch (Skip) and a son, Russell O’Neill Bowling (Susan). Her children were the center of her universe and she devoted herself fully and unselfishly to their care and happiness. They are unspeakably grateful for her hard work, self-sacrifice and generosity, which provided them with higher education and opportunity. Since before birth, they have been warmed and protected by her abiding and unconditional love, her kindness and her unflagging belief in their capabilities.
In turn, O’Neill was adored by her children and worshipped by her grandchildren,
Courtney Elizabeth and Bradley Rebekah Bowling, and Kristin, Jeffrey and Casey O’Neill Bond. They will miss her terribly and always cherish the memory of wonderful times with her. She is also survived by her beloved sister, Belle Byrd.
Mrs. Bowling was a founding member and matriarch of The Masters Baptist Church. She served faithfully in many capacities and ministered generously to the spiritual needs of others. A wonderful listener, she was an understanding and wise advisor to many both within and outside her church. Her giving spirit helped countless people quietly and in many ways. Her circle of friends was large and diverse; she embraced people without regard for age, race, religion or status. She especially loved children and they were drawn to her. She was honored to have sixteen namesakes.
O’Neill was sweet but genuine, intelligent but humble, dignified but down to earth, with a delightful sense of humor and a tender heart. She will be sorely mourned, deeply missed and never, ever forgotten.
