She was born in Washington’s Crossing, New Jersey and was a daughter of the late Kenneth and Mary Lavinia Pidcock Yates.
Phyllis graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Science from Bob Jones University, where she met her husband, Rev. Dr. Robert Marvin. They were devoted to one another for 63 years. She taught 8th grade before leaving in 1956 as a Presbyterian missionary to Brazil, where she served with her husband for 37 years. In addition to starting and directing a primary school, she ran two homes for young people to continue their education. Phyllis was a loving mother to her 3 daughters and a mother figure to countless others. Every day, she hosted guests and those needing care in her home. She took young people of the church to hold outdoor services in other towns. Several of her passions were embroidery, sewing, cooking, Jeopardy, crossword puzzles, and winning at all board games. In her lifetime, she fed many hundreds of people. She played the organ and led choir during those years. Bob and Phyllis spent a year as Missionaries-in-resident at Presbyterian College, where they fell in love with the town of Clinton and chose later to retire. Their work continued with 1st Presbyterian Church of Clinton, Fraser Memorial Presbyterian, 96 Presbyterian, Shady Grove Presbyterian, Habitat for Humanity, and the Century Club. Phyllis played piano for Vespers services at the Presbyterian Community and sang in the Laurens County Chorale. She devoted her life to Bible study and was a prayer warrior to the end. Her family will miss her loving presence in their lives.
She is survived by her husband, Rev. Dr. Robert Marvin of the home; her daughters, Joy Marvin Gilburt (Samuel) of Brazil, Jeannie Beth Marvin (William Raffensperger) of Ottawa, IL and Janette Elaine Marvin (Joseph L. Lee) of Clinton; her grandchildren, Yonatan Gilburt, Zoe Rei, Sara Raffensperger, Robert A. Lee (Ana Alicia Lee), Michael Lee, Nathan Lee and Kathryn Lee; and her great-grandchild Lorelai Lee.
